The infamous artist’s style. It’s haunted me since the beginning of my career, and quite honestly, I wish I could have convinced myself early on JUST TO LET IT GO. I hate the term, because what is a style really? I prefer the word language. Language is not something that will just come to you; it’s something you learn over time, and art is exactly that, a visual language. The best thing I did was ignore all the dos and donts of ‘finding your style’ and create work I wanted to with the intention of learning.

Throughout the last 2/3 years, I shifted from looking at my drawing as a ‘style’ to more of a visual language. I spent time understanding and exploring what media I enjoyed working in and how those could contribute to what I wanted to say with my illustrations.

In this post, I’ll discuss the main things I did to arrive at a stage where I feel I’m creating authentic work, listening more to my ideas and personal experiences and relying less on social media and trends. There were courses, a lot (and a lot) of mistakes, and time involved, but the process of working now feels more natural to me and more authentic.

There is no particular order to the steps I mention here; these have helped me over the years, and I hope they can be helpful to you, too.

So let’s go!
